Digital Fax Basics - ISDN PRI, T1, Etisalat, DID, DMG, SR140

How does it all fit in ? Read on to find out how you can adopt digital faxing for you enterprise.

For digital faxing or FoIP, the first thing you need to do is to get an ISDN data connection from Etisalat. Called an ISDN Primary Rate Interface (ISDN PRI), it offers you 30 channels of 64 kbps each, plus signalling channels, giving you a total bandwidth of 2 Mbps. Consider this as 30 distinct fax lines; so with one incoming connection you can make 30 simultaneous voice or data calls !

Etisalat and most telcos provide you with something call DID numbers, which is short for Direct Inward Dial. which means that you can have each employee having his or her own fax number. Which in turn means that any fax sent to the particular fax number, gets to the fax server and is automagically forwarded to the right person !

Now, once you have the PRI line terminated (which means that the telco has drawn the line to your server room), how do you connect it to your fax server ? This is where the Dialogic Media Gateway (DMG) comes into play. The PRI line is connected to the DMG, and is in turn connected to your switch or server. The media gateway knows what to do with a call that comes in, be it a fax, in which case it transfers it to the fax server.

Now that the DMG has transferred the fax call to the Fax Server, how does the Hylafax Enterprise Server receive the fax ? This is where the Dialogic Brooktrout SR140 digital fax modem plays its part. The SR140 receives the call from the DMG, processes the fax signals, and passes it on to Hylafax Enterprise. Once Hylafax Enterprise has received the fax through the SR140, it processes the fax and uses the routing mechanism to route the fax as appropriate to the end user.
